Umbilical Bridge

We begin life connected to someone else, dependent on a bond that is eventually meant to be broken. Umbilical Bridge explores what happens beyond that first separation — the connections that support us, carry us forward and remain part of us as we learn to stand on our own.

But connection can also raise questions of dependence. How aware are we of the people who hold us up? Do we recognize that support, take it for granted, or eventually need to separate ourselves from it?

Even the title holds a contradiction: an umbilical connection is essential to life, yet ultimately meant to be severed. The work leaves us to consider what remains after we let go — and whether we are ever entirely separate from the people and connections that helped carry us there.
